Spring Equipment Trailer Maintenance Checklist
Trailers are used year-round for many different types of jobs, but spring is often when most of the equipment is pulled back out after being idle over winter. This is an ideal time to do a thorough inspection of the trailer.
Below is an easy-to-follow list of areas to evaluate as you prepare to maintain your trailer this spring. All of these items will also help you determine how well your trailer performs and identify any potential seasonal problems before they affect your work.
1. Check Your Tires
Your first step should be to inspect your tires. This includes checking tire pressure, tread depth and any cracks along the sidewall. Also, make sure the lug nuts are tightened snugly and the spare is functional. Having quality tires is the first critical element for safe towing.
2. Inspect the Brakes
Stops need to be reliable, especially with larger loads. Test your electrical or hydraulic brakes to ensure they are functioning properly. Inspect brake pads, wires and leaks in the braking system. If something seems wrong, adjust accordingly before hitting the road.
3. Examine the Coupler and Safety Chains
Walk around the trailer and confirm that all lights are operating correctly. Brake lights, turn signals, side markers and running lights are all important for visibility. Clean the lenses and check for loose wiring. Repair any corrosion before it becomes a larger problem. Good visibility is one of the easiest ways to protect both you and other people.
4. Check the Coupler and Hitch
Confirm that your coupler is closing securely and locking into position. Check your safety chains to see if there are any weak links or rust patches. Apply new grease to the hitch pins and locking mechanisms. The goal here is to have a solid connection between the truck and the trailer. When the connection is solid, the entire rig remains stable and lessens the stress on the unit during transport.
5. Examine the Suspension and Wheel Bearings
Pay attention to any abnormal noises produced while rolling the trailer. Lubricate the wheel bearings and inspect your torsion or spring suspension components for excessive wear. Issues in these areas may create further problems later.
6. Verify Deck and Frame Condition
Identify any soft spots, loose boards, rust or structural damage to the frame. Secure any loose fasteners and tie-downs. Also, verify that any ramps or loading mechanisms move freely and lock as intended.
